Holycross —County Limerick

After the absence of centuries a relic of the true cross returned to Holycross Abbey in 1975 when this fine Cistercian Abbey, on the instigation of the late archbishop of Cashel Dr. Thomas Morris was restored and opened its doors once again to thousands of pilgrims and visitors from all over the world. The newly developed Padre Pio meditation garden on the west bank of the river Suir has a special pilgrimage day each May. The village itself has much to offer. Game anglers are accommodated upstream and downstream and day permits are available. The protection and enhancement of the environment have always been foremost in the minds of the developers and the community remains active in caring for the many flowers, shrubs and trees that adorn this historic and holy place. The cluster of thatched cottages in the vilalge were built in the early 1970?s as part of a regional Rent and Irish Cottage scheme. Note the interesting Butler plaque on the river bridge.
