La ville de Newry
La “Porte du Nord” est une jolie petite ville, pleine de ressources, baignant dans un décor naturel magnifique
de gauche à droite: Baignade dans les montagnes de Mourne, Bonne cuisine à Newry, Centre Commercial The Quays, Forêt de Rostrevor
Nichée au coeur d'une région exceptionnelle, entre les montagnes de Mourne et les hauteurs du Ring of Gullion, Newry, dans le Comté de Down en Irlande du Nord est un véritable régal des yeux.
Selon la légende, St Patrick aurait planté un if à l'extrémité de Carlingford Lough, qui pointa vers les cieux pendant sept cents ans son feuillage vert foncé. Le nom de Newry viendrait de là, déformation raccourcie Iuir Cinn Tra, La Pointe du Rivage.
Appelée la “Porte du Nord”, la région a été, depuis 4 000 Av. J.-C, une terre d'implantation. De son riche passé, Newry a conservé un bel ensemble de bâtiments publics et religieux. On y admirera notamment ses maisons géorgiennes, sa cathédrale datant des années 1830 et son hôtel de ville unique construit au-dessus de la Clanyre.
La situation géographique exceptionnelle de la ville offre, on s'en doute, un choix d'activités de plein air remarquable. Mais si vous préférez la douceur de ne rien faire, la ville recèle mille plaisirs, entre ses petites boutiques de rêve, ses bars et ses restaurants fabuleux. Tout cela sous le charme des gens de Newry.
