Feakle —County Clare

Situated near Scarriff on the road to Ennis, Feakle or 'Fiacal', which in gaelic means 'a tooth' or 'a sharp crag', lies in the southern foothills of the Slieve Aughty. The village has become famous for two reasons. Firstly it is the place in which the poet Brian Merriman taught as a schoolmaster. This Poet and schoolmaster wrote 'The Midnight Court' in the l8th century, a defence of women's rights which was to be banned right up to the latter half of the 20th century. Feakle was also home to Biddy Early, the wise woman or witch. Biddy Early's cottage has been restored and can be seen by visitors.
