The Antarctic Tragedy - Commemorating Captain Oates
Enniskillen
08 julio 2012 - 01 octubre 2012
An Exhibition by the Inniskillings Museum in memory of Lawrence Edward Grace Oates, who served in the 6th Inniskillings Dragoons.
The exhibition tells of Oates' role in Captain Robert Scott's final, ill-fated expedition to Antarctica between 1910 and 1913. After becoming incapacitated with frostbite and fearful of jeopardising the chances of his comrades reaching safety, he gallantly gave his life to help save his comrades. On 17th March 1912, in the middle of an Antarctic blizzard, he left the tent in which all of them were sheltering and walked out into - 40 Celcius temperatures to certain death with the famous last words; 'I am just going outside and may be some time.'
