Macroom is a busy market town in the valley of the Sullane River. Situated in Macroom is the gateway of Macroom Castle, which is the only remains left of the Castle, once owned by Sir William Penn whose son founded Pennsylvania.
Attractions in the Macroom area include Bealick Mill and Macroom Castle Demesne, the Riverside Park which has been developed with the entrance through the restored gateway. Macroom is also close to the Gearagh which is of major wildlife interest. For theatre and cinema lovers, there is the Briery Gap Cultural Centre.
