El barrio al sur de Dun Laoghaire fue establecido por el Rey Laoire en 480DC. El fuerte de Laoire resistió hasta 1803, cuando fue demolido para construir la Torre Martello, edificada como protección contra una posible invasión napoleónica. La Torre Martello todavía sigue en pie y actualmente aloja el Museo de James Joyce.
