Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival
Waterville
23 August 2012 - 26 August 2012
This is a festival designed for fun with events planned for all age groups and interests. A packed programme of events is being finalised and will include fabulously funny films, dynamic street entertainment, mime artists and side-splitting stand up comedy, parades, fire-eaters and the best of live music. A Tramps Ball will kick off the event on Thursday the 23rd to mark the opening night. Also mark your diary for Saturday the 25th for what promises to be an enthralling Gala event ceremony, incorporating a full entertainment programme including the presentation of the alternate ‘Oscar’ the ‘Charlie’ for the film competition. There is also a big cultural element to the Festival with tours and talks showcasing the spectacular beauty and history around Waterville which enticed the Chaplin family back so often to the place. Vintage cars will lead trips to places of interest like the Skellig Michael museum at Portmagee celebrating a truly unique UNESCO world heritage site, a sixth century island monastery lying fourteen miles off shore. There will also be a trip to the home of Daniel O’ Connell, ‘The Liberator,’ at Derrynane. Eminent poets, historians and scientists will give talks showcasing local history. Talks include Kerry Vikings, the poems from the Skelligs Lists and much more. Also, as there’s very little light pollution, astronomy is enlightening and there will be an expert to guide you through the galaxy or milky way - without ruining your diet. There are planned tours of the famous art gallery Cill Rillaig and other art trails. One feature of the Sunday parade will be vintage cars chauffeuring the winners of the film-star lookalikes such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn etc. around the village. Sport at the Festival includes ‘roll the red’, a game invented in Waterville, and played on a full-sized snooker table. Croquet is also planned. There will be a competition and instructions provided. There will be golf, putting lessons for children with a prize for the best learner and for adults a night of fun with fluorescent balls. There are rambles to see the unspoilt countryside – distances of your choice. There are wonderful sandy beaches and hills for those who want to take private time out. Behind the village is a large lake some seven miles long, and boats can be hired to visit the islands on it.
