Cratloe Wood is a State owned forest on the slopes of Woodcock Hillbeside the small village of Cratloe in County Clare. It is believed that the beams of the roof in Westminster Hall came originally from the Cratloe Wood. Cratloe Wood, in County Clare, gets its name from the Irish for land of the Sally trees. Beside the small village of Cratloe are the Cratloe forests, which were originally primeval oak woods. They are now a State forest on the slopes of Woodcock Hill. It is believed that the beams of the roof in Westminster Hall came from the Cratloe forest. In the ninth century this was a Mc Namara territory and was invaded by the Men of Ulster. These men took from Cratloe the wood that built the roof of the royal palace of Aileach near to Derry. There are pleasant woodland walks and picnic tables from which to enjoy a relaxing outdoor picnic. The site is operated by Coillte, a State owned company that operates a number of forestry areas throughout Ireland.
