Carrigaholt —County Clare

Shelter for seven Spanish Armada galleons in 1588, the fishing village was home to seaman, Michael 'Ruadh' (Red) Brennan who went on to captain the American 'Chanier' expedition ship from which Admiral Byrd took off for the first flight to the North Pole in 1926. Neighbouring villages on the tip of the incredible Loop Head peninsula are Cross and the Doonaha birthplace of scholar Eugene O'Curry, compiler of the 1841 Ordinance Survey of County Clare.
