International Bog Day and NI Bog Snorkelling Championships

Dungannon

28 Juli 2013 - 28 Juli 2013

Times: 11am to 5pm

A family fun day with the chance to try this unique sport which involves competitors completing two consecutive lengths of a 60 yard (55m) bog drain, in the shortest time possible. The championships, organised by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, took third prize in the Britain’s Favourite Quirky Event category which was voted for by the public in a poll run by Countryfile Magazine in September 2012.

Bog Day attracts people from all over Ireland and beyond. Competitors do two lengths of the bog drain with the aid of a snorkel, mask and flippers but without using any conventional swimming strokes.

The event is held to coincide with International Bog Day held in Peatlands Park, County Armagh, on the last Sunday in July, an annual occasion that attempts to highlight the threatened plight of peat bogs – 96% of which have been destroyed since 1945 – and what people, and especially gardeners, can do to preserve them.

Booking is advisable with the forms available from May at the telephone number and email listed below.
