Lewis Glucksman Gallery
Cork City
The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is a cultural and educational institution that promotes the research, creation and exploration of the visual arts in an international context. Located at University College Cork’s main entrance on Western Road and designed by O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects, this landmark building comprises over 2000m² and includes display spaces with international curatorial standard environmental controls, lecture facilities, a riverside restaurant and gallery shop. The Glucksman has received numerous awards including Best Public Building in Ireland from the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, a RIBA award, a UK Civic Trust award, and was shortlisted for the 2005 Stirling Prize. The Glucksman's artistic mission is to explore all aspects of visual culture and present a range of innovative and intellectually stimulating displays. The exhibitions programme at the Glucksman fosters scholarship in a new environment placing particular emphasis on the unique role of visual media in communicating knowledge. Central to this is the creation of discursive relationships between academic disciplines and art practice. This is reflected in a wide range of exhibitions that span various media and historical periods. The Lewis Glucksman Gallery places education at the heart of its activities with a wide range of art workshops, film screenings, seminars, lecture series and gallery tours on offer throughout the year that explore the artistic programme in greater depth. The Glucksman also presents a special schools programme that supports and enhances the National Curriculum. One of the key objectives of the education programme is to situate children in a university setting at an early age, encouraging them to view third-level education as an accessible and desirable prospect.
