Towns of Wicklow
Rathdrum —County Wicklow
The town, situated high on the western side of the beautiful Avonmore Valley, offers the tourist majestic views of the Avonmore River, which flows through the Vale of Clara. The town has been the location of films like Michael Collins, A Love Divided and Durango. Avondale House and Forest Park is set on 500 acres. It was the birthplace of Charles Stewart Parnell, one of the greatest political leaders of modern Irish history. Visitors are introduced to Avondale by way of a video presentation of the life of Parnell, which is followed by a stroll around this historic house. The house is set amongst the Avondale Forest, which is excellent for both picnics and walking. In the town there is the Parnell National Memorial Park. A few kilometres west of the town is Greenane and the Greenane Farm Museum and Maze. It has the ability to attract both young and old. Also west of the town is the wonderfully beautiful Glenmalure Valley; the valley is the longest glacier valley in the British Isles and is 'heaven' for walkers. The imposing Lugnaquilla Mountain, standing at 925m above sea level, overshadows the valley.
