Monaghan Town —County Monaghan
The centre of Monaghan Town is made up of three interconnecting squares-known as The Diamond, Church Square and Old Cross Square. Originally the market place was known as The Diamond. Also situated in The Diamond is the 1792 Market House, which is now the tourist office. Then located beside this is the County Museum, which has won the Council of Europe Award for its display of history and archaeology, which dates back many years. The most outstanding building of all is St Mc Cartan's Cathedral with the wonderful Catherine Wheel window on the gable. Monaghan town has a population of 6,000 people.
