Celebrating Medieval Ireland in Tulsk

Tulsk

25 April 2009 - 26 April 2009

The annual Cruachan School will bring Connacht’s heritage, and the valuable work of the Discovery Programme (Ireland’s Archaeological Research Institute), to life in 2009; with a Cultural Tourism event happening in Co Roscommon, on the last weekend in April, entitled “Celebrating Medieval Ireland in Tulsk”. With a day of academic lectures presented by top experts and professionals, who will explore the Medieval history, archaeology, and heritage of Ireland, on the Saturday, and a Living History Festival to include live battle re-enactment, authentic foods, archery, costumes, and birds of prey on the Sunday; this promises to be a fun and fact filled weekend which the entire family can enjoy. The Discovery Programme have been excavating on site in Tulsk since 2004, as part of their Medieval Rural Settlement project, and though their findings say that the site has been in use possibly since the Bronze Age, it is the late Medieval period that is of great interest. Queen Elizabeth sent Sir Richard Bingham to quash the Connacht rebellion, and he was garrisoned in Tulsk in the 1590’s – becoming known as “the Flail of Connacht”. Located within the Cruachan complex, beside the Celtic royal palace of the warrior Queen Maeve; Tulsk village and the surrounding area have long been a home and a focal point for Gaelic Lordship, a bastion that held true to Irish culture and heritage in the face of all that came. The Cruachan School will verbally communicate and visually share the available knowledge; to scholars and the general public alike, young and old, from far and near. Booking and further information through the Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre, Tulsk, County Roscommon.
