Devenish Island Monastic Site, Co.Fermanagh

Devenish Island can be found just outside Enniskillen, Co.Fermanagh approximately 1 and half miles by car, followed by a short ferry trip. Catch the ferry and travel across the waters of Lough Erne at Trory and visit the island which is home to a 12th century round tower and features many historical features including a ruined Augustinian abbey with figures and sculptures. The round tower stands at 30 metres (100ft) tall – internal ladders inside the tower mean the visitor can climb to the top and marvel at the spectacular views.

Also situated on the island are the walls of the Oratory of Saint Molaise who established the monastery in the 6th century, on a pilgrim route to Croagh Patrick.

While in the area why not visit another local island, White Island, which can be accessed via ferry which leaves from Castle Archdale Country Park.

Directions from Town: Embark at Trory Point, reached along lane to lough shore from junction of A32/B82, 2.5 miles north of Enniskillen.

Prices: Admission: £2.25 Adult, £1.20 Child or S/C

Opening times: NIEA ferry from Trory runs daily Good Friday - mid September (weather permitting). Centre open daily 10am to 6pm. Set sailings Jun - Aug, otherwise on demand. Closed mid September - Easter.
