Put your foot to the pedal in Connemara

A champion’s destination

Lush green forests, coastal trails and a network of quiet rural lanes and roads...what could be more enticing for the cycling enthusiast than the varied landscapes of the island of Ireland? But don’t just take our word for it – even champion of champions Lance Armstrong makes his way to this beautiful island’s shores for the fast-paced Tour of Ireland. With placid lakelands, extensive country parks and trails, and designated mountain parks providing a sterner challenge for adrenaline addicts, the island of Ireland offers the ultimate destination no matter what your fitness level may be.

Cycling in Ireland

Simple to get to from Great Britain thanks to a huge array of air and sea carriers, the island of Ireland offers endless opportunities to the keen cyclist. You can check out Northern Ireland’s National Cycle Network [link to cycleni.com], which includes plenty of circular routes plus six fully signposted long distance routes that will bring you past some of the most outstanding scenic views on the island. In the Republic of Ireland, you’ll find a whole host of routes and trails that are perfect for pedal-powered exploring, plus a series of designated Cycling Hubs – towns and villages, such as Westport, Achill, Wexford and Doolin, amongst others, where you can base yourself and your bike and be confident that you’ll be able to rest your weary head after a long day cycling. All of the Cycling Hubs offer a wealth of places to sleep, drink and eat, plus lots of suggested looped cycling routes to help you plan your cycling adventure. You could also stretch your legs a little further afield with a fantastic 326km long linear route, which brings you on a cross-border trail along the tranquil country roads in Fermanagh, Leitrim and Donegal.

Cycling tour operators

Whether you want to head to the island of Ireland with your own set of wheels or hire your two-wheeler when you get here, opting for a cycling tour operator can take the strain off your shoulders and your thighs, as they can arrange everything from getting you to Ireland and transport to your chosen destination to luggage transfers between accommodation and even great nights out in the local pubs or restaurants. It really would be a shame to miss out on all this local expertise as you may inadvertently pedal past some hidden gems! With an operator, you’ll get that extra special insight into the region’s history, heritage, flora and fauna, plus its intricate and fascinating folklore. It’s also handy to know that your guide is on hand nearby, should you need assistance along the way!

A two-wheeled adventure

One of the biggest pleasures of cycling around the island of Ireland has to be the people you meet, and the tales you’ll be able to tell on your return! If you’re on a guided tour with other like-minded folk, you’re guaranteed to make friends for life and have lots of stories to swap as you explore; while if you’re simply winding your own way along mountain tracks, forested valleys or coastal curves, the locals you pass will always provide a nod, a smile and words of encouragement to keep you moving! And nothing really beats nestling down for a hot bowl of soup with fresh soda bread in the village pub before you muster up the energy to take to the saddle once again!
