International Sea Shanty Gathering
Waterford City
04 October 2013 - 05 October 2013
The working songs and music from the old Tall Ships of yesteryear will be performed in a number of selected locations around the city on Friday 4th October and Saturday 5th October culminating in a large concert with all groups providing their best acts in one venue for the delight of the general public in Waterford. Groups from Holland/Netherlands,Germany.Denmark and UK will provide renditions of selected working songs and music. Hooks and Crookes organised a very successful Festival in 2010 called the Waterford Seafaring Festival of Music and Song where almost 200 performers from across Europe descended on the city for a weekend of lively performances and great craic within the public houses and Hotels of the city. The International Sea Shanty Gathering 2013 will be a celebration of the historical connection with all matters seafaring that Waterford as a port was so intrinsically associated with for centuries past. The hardships that seafarers experienced in times past were made more endurable through the medium of music and song. This will be the aim of the International Sea Shanty Gathering for 2013 to provide the cosmopolitan experience of men and women from across Europe who share a common interest and love of the music and songs of the sea. Public performances will be free however the concert planned for Saturday 5th October in a major venue(yet to be agreed) will attract a cover charge.
