Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim
Galway City
27 July 2013
Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim is a 13km swim across Galway Bay from Aughinish in Co. Clare, to Blackrock tower in Salthill, Galway. It is one of the biggest fundraising events for Cancer Care West and has raised in excess of €300k in 7 years. In the 7 years of the swim, it has seen over 130 people make successful crossings including a heart transplant patient, English Channel Swimmers, a Spinal Injury patient and two people who made a two way crossing in 2010! This year the event will be bigger and better. On top of the 40 individual spots available, there will be 10 relay spots for the 2013 swim. Each swimmer is asked to provide their own support boat for the crossing. The event receives significant support from the sailing community in Galway and help can be provided to source a support boat if needed. Each swimmer is also asked to make a concerted effort to raise €500 for Cancer Care West through mycharity.ie or through their own endeavours. There will be a number of swim clinics running through Spring and Summer 2013. See Facebook page for more information.
