Cobh Bell Recitals
Cobh
05 May 2013 - 29 September 2013
The 86th season of recitals on the unique carillon of Cobh's Pugin cathedral presented by resident carillonneur Adrian Gebruers KSG, including a number of guest recitals by leading international performers. Takes place between 4.30pm & 5.30pm on Sundays from May to September 2013. The 49-bell Carillon of St Colman's Cathedral in Cobh is the only such instrument in this country and the largest in Ireland and Britain. It also includes Ireland's largest bell, named St Colman (3.6 tons). Regarded as one of the finest carillons in the world both for the quality of its precisely tuned cast bronze bells and also the unique acoustical setting of the instrument, the Carillon is played from a console within the belfry, consisting of a keyboard and a pedalboard. The action is completely mechanical and there is no artificial assist. A closed-circuit system is in operation showing the carillonneur playing the instrument. This can be viewed inside the Cathedral – turn right as you enter through the main door. However, the bells are best heard outside in the grounds of the Cathedral or in the car park to the north of the building. All genres of music can be played on the carillon - religious, folk, classical, etc. Recitals are preceded by guided tours of the Cathedral ending with a short video presentation on the Carillon. Full programme details are available at the Cathedral at the time of recitals. Adrian Gebruers succeeded his father Staf as Cathedral Carillonneur in 1970 and is also lecturer in Carillon Studies at University College Cork.
