Tiny fishing village setting where giants of the Irish literary revival formed the Irish National Theatre, now internationally acclaimed as The Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
Lady Augusta Gregory would travel from her Coole Park residence inside the borders of county Galway to Mount Vernon Lodge to entertain guests including Nobel Prize for Literature winners, George Bernard Shaw and William Butler Yeats. The national theatre concept was conceived Lady Gregory and Yeats were visiting with Count Florimond de Basterot at nearby Duras House in Kinvara, now a youth hostel. Literary connections are traced in the dramatic entertainment at restored 15th century Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara.
