Kilbeggan —County Westmeath
This busy town famous for its whiskey is located on the N6 (Dublin - Galway road) and has been a place of importance since the early Christian times when St. Beccan founded a monastery here. The site later housed a 13th century Cistercian abbey. The area around Kilbeggan is noted for the extensive Esker Riada or sand hills that survive from the Ice Age glacial drift. Much importing and exporting was undertaken in Kilbeggan with the Grand Canal acting as the mode of transport. Kilbeggan now boasts one of Irelands premier horse race courses.
