Garrykennedy —County North Tipperary

Garrykennedy for the craic proclaims the car sticker. This beautiful hamlet situated less than two miles off the Nenagh Portroe lake-drive road is a true gem. It is a small unspoiled fishing and boating village with a great reputation for traditional Irish music. Up to the 1950?s it was a busy port with regular visits by the Guinness barges delivering barrels of stout. In recent years it has been developed to cater for increased cruiser traffic. The local fishing interests are well served with extensive boat accommodation slip way and services. The remains of the O?Kennedy tower house, built in 1480, dominated the harbour. Visitors are encouraged to take the signposted wooded walk, suitable for wheelchairs. An interesting item is the village letterbox, which illustrates the transition from British jurisdiction to the of the Saorstá´ (Freestate) post in 1922.
