Our privacy policyThe Republic of Ireland was officially neutral during the Second World War, but as Belfast was part of the United Kingdom and had major engineering and shipbuilding industries, it was targeted by German forces and suffered four air raids. Pitifully unprepared for the bombing, the city was short on air raid shelters and over 900 people were killed during the Belfast Blitz, making the Northern Irish capital one of the worst affected cities in the UK.
