Health

British visitors to the Republic of Ireland are covered under an agreement with the Department of Health, but some form of identification and the new E111 form are necessary.

The E111 form allows resident UK travellers travelling around Europe to receive free or reduced cost state provided health care when visiting any EU country.

The New Form

There are two major changes to the old E111 form:

  • The new form is on an individual as opposed to a family basis.
  • During the course of 2005 a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will be introduced when collecting your new E111 form.
  • The new form came into effect on January 1 2005 (these forms can be collected at your local post office).

British visitors to Northern Ireland require no documentation and will receive treatment as they would in Britain.

Visitors travelling from outside the EU member states are advised to take out personal travel insurance.
