Clonard —County Meath

Situated 15 kms west of the Royal Canal village of Enfield, where there is a canal park, on the Dublin-Mullingar road, Clonard today shows few signs of its glory in Ireland's golden age. The Monastery, founded by St. Finian in the 6th century was the 'training place of the Saints of Ireland'. In the 12th Century it was the cathedral of the diocese of Meath but this honour was transferred to Trim by Bishop Simon de Rochfort. The Protestant church contains a fine 15th -century baptismal font and the village was also the site of one of the last major engagements of the 1798 Rebellion. There is also a Norman motte and bailey on the outskirts of the village.
