Volvo Ocean Race, from Abu Dhabi to Galway
The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers - fearless men who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago. During the nine months of the Volvo Ocean Race, the teams will sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, and Lorient.
The race set sail from the port of Abu Dhabi in January 2012 and will end in the city of Galway in the West of Ireland in July 2012. The scale of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race in Galway meant a huge success for both the city and for the race. Once again, Volvo will revisit this ancient enclave on the west coast of Ireland, although this time as the finish line edition 2011-12.
